Where to stay in Dorado, Puerto Rico: A Review of Embassy Suites by Hilton Dorado del Mar Beach Resort

IMG_7907.jpg

While visiting Puerto Rico, spending time in San Juan is a complete necessity. However, It’s also important to escape the city and see more of the island - and Dorada is a great starting point! If you’re wondering where to stay while in Dorado, we have a great suggestion - Embassy Suites by Hilton Dorado del Mar Beach Resort. Keep reading to find out all the details of our stay and everything you need to know!!

Location:

The Dorada region is approximately 45 minutes from San Juan, just west of the city and still on the North coast. We went directly from the airport. Knowing we likely wouldn’t be leaving the resort very much we didn’t want to rent a car, however that is your most cost effective way of getting there. We grabbed a taxi from the airport, and then used Uber to get back into San Juan (slightly cheaper than taxis).

Definitely a favourite thing about Embassy Suites is the rooms. As the name suggests, each room in the hotel is a suite with two rooms (living room and separate bedroom). This is a great feature if you’re travelling with your family and or just want the extra space. Our bedroom had a big (and comfy) king sized bed, and a living room with kitchenette that had a small fridge and microwave. Our favourite part of the room was the balcony with an amazing view of the pool and ocean.

Amenities :

The property has all the amenities you’d want, from a gym, a spa, a very large pool and of course the beach. There are a few different restaurants on the premises, as well as a convenience store (it also sells some pre-made sandwiches and salads as well as pizza to go) and a couple of bars including a pool bar and lobby bar. One of our best things about our stay was the nightly “happy hour” from 5-7 pm with free drinks and snacks. We’d read some reviews complaining that the drink line was very long but we never waited for more than a minute to get drinks (and we were there in high season).

The beach was one of our favourite parts and seemed underutilized by the guests, making it relatively quiet! The water offshore looked pretty wavy but the hotel had man-made breakers that created a nice lagoon area making it ideal for swimming (we saw a lot of people fishing as well).

Pros:

  • Beautiful beach (but can be windy)

  • Full suites

  • Gorgeous pool

  • Fast Internet

  • Friendly Staff

Cons:

  • We found the pool quite busy during the day, especially in the afternoon and could get quite noisy. This is definitely a family oriented hotel so if you’re mainly looking to relax in a quiet setting it may not be for you (or you may want to head to the beach).

  • Not close to amenities (long walk or drive required to nearest stores and restaurants)
