Exploring Bologna, Italy. Top Things to do in the City.

Welcome to our tour in Bologna, Italy! Where we explore the top things to do in the city!

We explored the fantastic Northern Italian city of Bologna, the capital of the Emilia-Romagna region. We start the day at the Giardini Margherita and then walk up to the church San Michele in Bosco. We also climb the Asinelli Tower to see a beautiful view. In addition, we got to catch a glimpse of the canals (La Piccola Venezia). It was an amazing trip.

The view from Giardini Margherita

Giardini Margherita

We started off the day in a park called Gardini Margherita in Bologna. It is also known as the red city because of its red roofs and buildings. The capital of the Emilia-Romagna region has 400,000 people in total. We walked our way up a hill to a church called San Michele in Bosco to see all these beautiful red buildings. The view was spectacular. We'd highly recommend coming if you're here and checking out all the Red Roofs.

The main square and Basilica di San Petronio

Basilica di San Petronio

We came to the main square which is called Plaza Maggiore. It is a huge square that has a beautiful fountain and a gorgeous church. The church is called Basilica di San Petronio. It is the tenth largest church in the world by volume. Plus, it is the biggest church made of brick in the world. So many tourists and visitors were sitting on its steps enjoying the view.

View of The two towers from the ground

The two towers of Bologna

We made our way through cute little alleys trying to find the big towers that we’d heard about. This place is called the two towers and are the symbol of Bologna. Pisa is not the only leaning tower in Italy after all. We decided to walk up to the top of the Asinelli Tower which is the smaller one. This tower was named after the family that built it. The tower next to it is called Tower Garisenda. To save time we bought our tickets online in advance instead of right at the tower. It was five euros per person. The tower we climbed is 97 metres high and took about 10 minutes to get to the top, the views were beautiful but it was very crowded.

Peeking window

On our tour in Bologna, we visited a canal called La Piccola Venezia. It was very cool to watch. However, we found this peeking window that has a view of the beautiful canal and is called Finestrella di Via Piella. It’s a great spot to visit if you’re looking for something Instagrammable.

Along the way we learnt various fun facts about the city. Such as Bologna is the seventh most prominent and most populated city in all of Italy. It also has the oldest university in the world, it dates back to a thousand AD and it is still active.

Our tour in Bologna was interesting and fun. It’s a must visit when you’re in Italy.
