Welcome to Our Halifax Summer Food Tour! Let’s explore Halifax’s amazing street food on the waterfront.
Our home base is Halifax and we therefore spend a significant amount of time there, especially during the pandemic and lockdown when all the restaurants and shops were closed. However, once things reopened we decided it’s time for a Halifax waterfront street food tour. Summer is the perfect time to explore Halifax and the waterfront is a must visit! We are about to try some delicious Halifax street food.
A traditional Quebec Poutine
Poutine
We decided to start our street food tour with classic Canadian poutine. Poutine is a traditional dish that comes originally from Quebec but you can find it all over Canada. This classic poutine contains fries, gravy and cheese curds. The gravy is super rich and thick and the fries were golden crispy. There are lots of places that have various renditions of this dish such as lobster and turkey. If you are coming to Canada make sure to try the original poutine.
Lobster Roll from Dave’s Lobster
Lobster Roll
Lobster rolls are very popular in Halifax, Nova Scotia and quite pricey. The roll we went for had three ounces of lobster and was topped with some chives and celery. It had some creamy mayo as well. Lobster rolls are typically served on a hot dog bun, and this one was no different. The bread was slightly toasted and the chunks of lobster were so fresh. It all falls apart in the mouth. The texture is very creamy and the chives bring a nice flavor. We got our lobster roll from a place called Dave’s but there are other places here where you can get lobster. This one was definitely fantastic.
A classic BeaverTail

After trying two savoury treats. We decided to go for something a little bit sweet. We came to a place called BeaverTails which is another Canadian staple. It is a classic sweet treat to try across Canada. As you can tell, it is shaped like a beavertail. Essentially, it is a deep-fried dough that can is topped with different things such as cream cheese and hazelnut. We went for the traditional or classic topping which is sugar and cinnamon. The Beavertails are served hot and this one smelled amazing. It is a little bit chewy, not crunchy and completely delicious.
Italian pizza from Sapori
Italian Style Pizza
A new restaurant just opened a few months ago (at the time of filming our video) named Sapori Italian Street Food. Everyday they have different kinds of pre-made pizza that are cut into squares (we’ve only ever seen pizza served like this in Italy). We went for a white, potato pizza with mozzarella and rosemary on top. The slice was hot and very crispy and the taste of olive oil really stands out, it was delicious! The next slice we chose was named Salsiccia. It had Italian sausage, salami, caramelized onions, mozzarella cheese, tomatoes and honey. The crust was thick and the tomato sauce was very fresh. The taste was exceptional.

We stopped by a chocolate place called Peace by Chocolate. The place smelled amazing, they also have a really interesting and inspiring story so be sure to learn about during your visit. There is chocolate from wall to wall, with everything from bars to little squares. We got a little box with four chocolates to taste. The first one was a little maple leaf with caramel dark chocolate and was very colourful. It was rich and creamy and it had no sugar added. It was delicious. The second one is one of the most popular. It is a passion fruit, white chocolate. The flavour was superb. The third one was a caramel truffle milk chocolate in a form of a square. It was filled with delicious flavours. The last one is a hazelnut dark chocolate with nuts. It was thick and dark and is a bit heavier than the other ones. This place definitely is worth a visit.

Cow's Ice Cream
Our last stop was the famous Cow's Ice Cream. We decided to finish our street food tour with a delicious ice cream dessert. We went for “Chip Chip Away” (vanilla, caramel and toffee) and a mint chocolate, both in a waffle cone. They were delicious. Cow's Ice Cream is the best. There is usually a line, luckily it was mid-day so there wasn’t much of a wait. Cow’s is always a must visit during a summer day trip to the Halifax Waterfront.
